Child Abuse Awareness Raised In April
Superior Sets Proclamation For Today
Superior, Wis.
April is National Child Abuse Awareness month but Superior took it a step further. It all happened this afternoon to kick off the month long campaign.
Mayor Bruce Hagen proclaimed today as “Celebrate Children Day” in Superior.
According to the National Children’s Alliance, nearly 700 thousand children are abused or neglected in the U.S. each year and about 4 out of 5 abusers are the victim’s parents.
The City of Superior is hoping that on days like today, being able to talk about a difficult subject could have an impact on the community.
“Child abuse, it’s not an easy thing to think about, it’s not always an easy thing to talk about. It’s a reality that happens in this community, it happens in other communities. I guess not talking about it as you suggested, talking about it, highlighting ways that we can spot it, identify it educate ourselves about it. It’s very important,” Says District Attorney Mark Fruefauf.
Fruehauf went on to say strengthening families and preventing child abuse requires a shared commitment of individuals and organizations in every community.
If you have any suspicion of abuse or neglect you can reach out to your local law enforcement agency for help.
