Preservation Corps Uses Machines to Raise Grave Stones
DULUTH, Minn. — A preservation corps from here in Minnesota is working hard at Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
The Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps is resetting heavy grave stones and obelisks that have deteriorated over time.
They’re doing it with the help of a chain hoist supported by a wooden tripod.
Executive director Rolf Hagberg says the machinery is necessary because some of these stones can weigh hundreds of pounds, and are difficult to move without a little help.
“We do this in a very controlled way, in an easy way – not necessarily slow – so it’s all controlled, and it’s real safe,” Hagberg said.
Northern Bedrock has a crew of 18 young adults; they have multiple preservation projects lined up through the rest of the year.
