Runners Taking Over Twin Ports Ahead of Marathon Weekend

Volunteers are still needed to assist with security around the finish line in Canal Park

DULUTH, Minn. – Just two days until Grandma’s Marathon weekend begins and tonight the runners are already arriving.

Nearly 20,000 runners will descend on Duluth for the 5K, half and full marathons.

Some people are already checking  in at hotels across the twin ports ahead of the weekend’s events.

Staff over at the Park Point Marina Inn tell us their rooms sold out back in January. They say this is their busiest weekend, with people from all over the country staying with them.

“We get to see them come in, they’re here to run and celebrate afterwards, just have a good time here in Duluth,” said Andrea Wright, hospitality manager at Park Point Marina Inn. “It’s really fun to be part of that and see all that energy come through our lobby.”

There are still a few rooms left for this weekend around the Twin Ports. The cheapest rate available online is at The Viking Motel in Two Harbors at $209.

Volunteers are also gearing up for Saturday’s events.

With an estimated crowd of more than 30,000 people in Canal Park, that means an added security presence.

The Finish Line Security Team will be out monitoring crowds along the streets and bleachers on race day. The team will also be checking bags and assisting medical crews near the finish line.

There are currently 90 volunteers signed up, but organizers say they are still looking for anyone who wants to help on Saturday.

“We try hard to keep a happy component to the whole day. We have a reputation around the country of being one of the best run races in the country, said Cheryl Fosdick, the volunteer coordinator for the Finish Line Security Team. “We’ve always been known for our patience and our service.”
