Grandma’s Restaurant Still Recovering from Record Flood

The restaurant took on nearly three feet of water from nearby Miller Creek

DULUTH, Minn. – Five years ago, relentless rain clogged pipes, overflowed sewers and blew manholes into the air. Miles of roads and streets crumbled and washed out, leaving some stranded and others forced to evacuate.

History was made by mother nature on June 19, 2012.

Grandma’s restaurant took on nearly three feet of water from nearby Miller Creek, surrounding the building.

Workers were forced to evacuate as the water continued to rise.

Tony Boen, the regional manager at Grandma’s, remembers canoeing to the property, only to see pieces of the restaurant floating inside.

“For 6 weeks we just tore down the restaurant, the interior, got new flooring in, rebuilt the walls,” said Boen. “We had to rewire everything that was below 36 inches.”

$400,000 in repairs later, Grandma’s reopened just a month later and get are just now finishing up a new parking lot, which is one of the last pieces of the restaurant to be repaired.
