DNR Urges Caution Burning Yard Debris, as Fire Danger is Elevated

DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is urging caution while burning yard wast or leaf piles outdoors, as areas of northwestern and central Minnesota have elevated fire danger due to sparse rain, high winds, and lack of humidity. As a result, open burning may be restricted in certain counties. Those looking to burn are encouraged to check the burning permit website to verify conditions.

When weather conditions warrant burning, state fire team leaders may turn burning permits on or off.

During high fire danger, residents may need to find alternatives such as composting or hauling brush to collection sites or simply wait until the conditions return to low danger.

The DNR notes that burning restrictions do not apply to campfires, they are still allowed. When building a campfire, clear an area, watch it continuously, and make sure it is out cold to the touch before leaving.

Fire dangers can quickly change, check the Minnesota Incident Command System website for the latest fire behavior conditions.
