Referendum Being Discussed in Maple

Surveys for Referendum Need to be Turned in by Oct. 30

MAPLE, Wis.-The Maple Wisconsin School District is looking for the public’s help to determine what they should ask for in a proposed referendum.

Right now the district is looking for $1.7 million a year over the next five years. In order to remain where they are at right now, they need at least $576,000 over the next five years.

Earlier this month a survey was sent out to more than 5,000 community members to get their input and what they want from to see improved in the district.

The superintendent said the money would be used to offset losses in funding they have seen due to state cuts and losing students.

She told us the new money would go toward a variety of issues including teacher retention. Surrounding districts are paying teachers more money, which causes Maple to lose them.

Some of the funds would also go to school security and technology funding.

“What we’re seeing is more career pathways for our students,” said Dr. Sara Croney, superintendent for Maple School District. “They want to make sure we are sending out students who are competitive, not just around here, but in a global society.”

Survey results will be released Nov.13 in Northwestern’s High School auditorium at 5 p.m.

If a vote on the referendum moves forward, it will be in April. Residents have until Oct. 30 to send in the survey.
