Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Pick-Up Truck on Tower Avenue

SUPERIOR, Wis.- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a truck at 7 a.m. Thursday at North 12th Street and Tower Avenue in Superior.

The pedestrian, who authorities have identified as 59-year-old Kenneth Meinke, of Superior, was crossing Tower when a company truck with a plow on it struck him.

Police believe Meinke was in the crosswalk at the time of the incident.

“It’s still fully dark out. There was wet road conditions at the time, and those certainly might be some mitigating factors in this,” said Assistant Chief Matt Markon.

The driver of the truck was not arrested and has been cooperating fully with the investigation, according to Markon.

Markon believes this accident is a strong reminder to always be alert on the roads — whether your a pedestrian or driver.

“I think it’s important for everyone to be aware of what’s going on around them, whether you are the pedestrian on foot or the person behind the wheel looking out for pedestrians. It’s so very important to be aware of your surroundings, and everyone has to be doing that in order to be safe,” Markon said.

The Wisconsin State Patrol and Superior Police Department are continuing to investigate.
