Apostle Islands Ice Caves Not Open Yet

Ice Caves Could Open at End of January

APOSTLE ISLANDS, Wis.-The ice caves on the Apostle Islands are still not open yet, but they could be opening at the end of January.

Staff have been checking the ice lately and say it’s too unstable right now to visit the beautiful caves.

When the caves do open, visitors will be asked to pay a $5 recreation fee to enjoy them.

Below is a Facebook post from the parks department about the ice caves:

“Experienced National Park Service rangers are checking the ice, and once the conditions allow for visitors, the ice caves in the park will be opened by the NPS. The earliest this could happen this year is near the end of January. The pack ice currently at the caves is still unstable. If and when the caves open, you may explore the ice formations and caves on your own. There are no authorized guided tours of any ice caves in the park, but rangers will be happy to answer questions! Other than the special $5 daily recreation fee (for those 16 years of age and older), there are no additional fees to access the ice caves. Be safe — follow the guidance from park rangers who have experience reading ice conditions, which can change rapidly.”
