UMD Hockey Schedule Released for 2018-2019 Season
Bulldogs starting off their season with home opener against the Gophers.
DULUTH, Minn.- At least one dozen games against clubs that qualified for last spring’s NCAA playoffs — including a rematch of the Frozen Four title bout — a first-ever tip to Arizona, and a season-opening home-and-home series with its arch rival, the University of Minnesota, highlight the University of Minnesota Duluth’s 2018-19 men’s hockey schedule.
The defending NCAA champion Bulldogs will launch their 75th season of intercollegiate competition on Oct. 6 at AMSOIL Arena by hosting Minnesota (which they have defeated a program-best eight straight times) before concluding the non-conference set the ensuing night in Minneapolis.
On Oct. 12-13, UMD and Michigan Tech University will collide in Houghton, Mich., and then it’s back to AMSOIL Arena the following weekend and another pair of non-conference assignments with the University of Maine in the Black Bears’ first appearance in Duluth since Jan. 7, 1989. The Bulldogs and the University of Notre Dame, which squared off in the NCAA national championship game this past April, are scheduled to meet on Oct. 26-27 in South Bend, Ind. After a bye week, the Bulldogs will return to the ice to open up their sixth season of National Collegiate Hockey Conference play with a Nov. 9-10 series against visiting Colorado College. The remainder of the Bulldogs’ 16-game regular season home schedule includes matchups with the University of North Dakota (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), St. Cloud State University (Jan. 11-12), the University of Nebraska-Omaha (Jan. 25-26), the University of Denver (Feb. 15-16) and Miami University (March 1-2). During the Christmas Holiday break, the Bulldogs will participate in the Desert Hockey Classic in Tempe, Ariz., which features host Arizona State University, Clarkson University and Minnesota State University-Mankato. Minnesota State, Denver, Michigan Tech, Notre Dame and St. Cloud State were all 2017-18 NCAA Tournament participants.
UMD faces Colorado College, Denver, Miami, North Dakota and St. Cloud State four times each next season and the other two remaining NCHC members (Omaha and Western Michigan) just twice.
The Bulldogs, under the direction of 18th year head coach Scott Sandelin, closed out the 2017-18 season by capturing the program’s second NCAA national championship and posting a 25-16-3 overall record.
