Residents Turn to Social Media to Tackle City-Wide Snow Problem

A Facebook page dedicated to walking pedestrians and their safety is gaining momentum.

DULUTH, Minn.- A group of Duluth residents are using social media to educate local property owners of their responsibilities when it comes to clearing snow.

The Facebook page ‘We walk in Duluth’ was created by resident Alice Tibbetts, who moved to Duluth in October after seeing what she described as areas of the city not kept up well after a snowfall.

Tibbetts says London Road is particularly bad with snow piles making crosswalk buttons unreachable and some businesses not shoveling sidewalks.

“The reality is pedestrians need a safe place to walk. And we shouldn’t pity the poor property owner, we should pity the poor pedestrian that can’t get around,” Tibbetts said.

The group is working to create a new initiative called ‘Shop Shoveled’ to encourage people to shop at businesses that keep their properties clear of snow.
