Big Construction Projects Happening This Summer
DULUTH, Minn. – Three big construction projects are high on the agenda for the summer in Duluth.
One is looking to finish work already started and the others are addressing much needed updates to the city.
The reconstruction of the Lakewalk has been happening for quite some time.
Now the city is ready to move on to the next phase after a few delays.
Phase II involves finishing the reconstruction of the shoreline from Fitger’s to the Northland Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
During this phase, boardwalk trails will be replaced.
Also, new asphalt will be installed.
A family from Rochester was visiting Duluth for the day.
They were planning to take a quick stroll along the Lakewalk.
“It’s kind of disappointing we were going to try to walk off lunch. Now we have to find another place to walk, but we do use it when we come up this way and it’s an enjoyable walk,” said Doug Hildre.
Detour signs are now up for convenience while this particular stretch is closed.
The Lakewalk project is expected to finish by August.
At that time, the city plans to reopen it to the public.
A million dollar construction project is also happening on Superior Street in Lester Park.
“We are rehabilitating the Lester River Bridge and also reconstructing both sides of the street coming in to the bridge. We will also be reconstructing Lester River Road,” said KJM Contractors Project Manager Heath Line.
The reconstruction includes adding new curbs and sidewalks in the area as well as addressing other areas of concern on the bridge.
“There are obviously some elevation issues and some heaving issues on each end of the bridge,” said Line.
Lester River Road repairs will take place between Superior Street and Strand Road.
A temporary traffic light has also been installed on London road to help mediate traffic flows.
The entire project is expected to wrap up by September, in time for the NorthShore Inline Marathon.
Harbor Drive between Railroad Street and the Vista Fleet offices is also expected to close this week.
Crews will be replacing a new storm pipe.
The road will be reopened when the work is done.
Additional work is also planned for Harbor drive, which is expected to be completed by August.
Access to the DECC and the Vista fleet landing will be available, throughout the construction process.
