Suspect, Victim Severely Injured After Auto-Theft Crash In Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. – Duluth police are investigating after they say a 29-year-old man stole a vehicle before crashing into another vehicle — severely injuring himself and the other 58-year-old driver.

The call for help came in around 1:15 p.m. Thursday near 70th Avenue West and Grand Avenue near Perfect Timing Auto Repair.

A witness to the crash said they saw a white Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed down Grand Avenue before it hit the other vehicle.

Randal Shaw, an employee at Perfect Timing Auto Repair, ran to the scene and saw the suspect crawling away across the street.

“That’s when I had to go to my truck and get my cuffs out of my truck and try to detain him until the police could get here,” Shaw said.

Duluth police said both men were hospitalized Thursday night with severe injuries that are not expected to be life threatening.  A dog was also injured. Its condition was not immediately known.

Police are expected to arrest the 29-year-old suspect on charges of gross negligence, vehicle theft, driving after revocation and failure to maintain lane.
