Where Did Halloween Actually Come From?

Duluth's own Lady Ocalat tells the history of Halloween.

DULUTH, Minn.- Halloween wasn’t always trick–or–treating and pop–culture costumes, it has a long–rooted history in Celtic religion.

According to Duluth’s own spooky specialist Lady Ocalat, the day started as a festival known as Samhain to celebrate the dark time of the year.

The Celts believed the barrier between our world and the ghost world was very thin during this time so they danced and wore costumes to ward off weird creatures.

“This time of year, people will swear they see a little shadow out of the corner of their eye or catch a little orb on their camera that wasn’t there when they take the picture, and so magic is afoot,” Lady Ocalat said. “That veil is very, very thin between the worlds.”

Once the Christian religion adopted the holiday, they called it All–Hallow’s Eve, or the last night before November!

People started offering food to dead ancestors as a way to remember them and over the years food turned into candy, Trick–or-Treating came about and the Halloween we know and love was born.
