Spectrum Farm Strawberries Just Weeks From Picking Season
There might not be strawberries in the fields just yet, but the thousands of white blossoms mean strawberries aren't far behind.
CARLTON, Minn. – The beginning of summer means that a variety of fruits are in season including strawberries and Spectrum Farm Strawberries is just weeks away from opening to visitors.
There might not be strawberries in the fields just yet, but the thousands of white blossoms mean strawberries aren’t far behind.
“This year is an unusual year but not actually for the strawberries. Strawberries don’t know any different,” said farmer Steve Schulstrom, the owner of Spectrum Farm Strawberries.
The farm is projected to be open at some point in the first week of July.
Schulstrom not only had to fight through least than agreeable weather but also COVID-19 putting a big question mark on things.
They plan on just allowing a certain amount of people in each row to pick strawberries along with limiting the number of customers in the parking lot.
“My biggest concern is to get people to come out here I provide a safe environment we are outdoors so as long as we have people spread out I think we’ll be fine. We’ve got a really good crop,” said Schulstrom.
This year the strawberries had to endure fluctuating temperatures along with a dry spring.
At some points, Schulstrom has had to turn the irrigation system on just to prevent the plants from freezing.
He says a farmer is never happy with the weather, but he’s happy with his crop so far.
“We’ve had a lot of sun, that part has been really good that’s kind of made up for the really cool spring so we’ll maybe be three days shy of when we usually open,” said Schulstrom.
The berries are raised all-natural with no pesticides and Schulstrom is working hard to keep the farm open for those families who make it a tradition to come back year after year.
He also says that he won’t know exactly the day picking can start until one or two days before.
