City Moves to Change New Duluth Flag Statement To Provide More Inclusion

"I think our administration values how diverse our community is and focuses on not erasing those voices specifically for people of African heritage or people of color," said City Planner Mollie Hinderaker.

DULUTH, Minn. – The City of Duluth is it taking another step forward towards being more inclusive.

The city is changing to the wording of a statement associated with the new Duluth flag design.

Last year, the City of Duluth created a contest to help find a new design for the city flag after much of the community requested a new one.

In August, the city adopted the new design, which also included the statement, to represent the city.

In recent weeks, members of the public have come forward expressing their concerns about the statement not being inclusive to all people.

After hearing those concerns, the city partnered with the NAACP Duluth chapter to re-write the narrative to also include people of African heritage.

“It’s clear, historically, that cities have not taken the time to listen to everyone in the community,” said Mollie Hinderaker. “I think our administration values how diverse our community is and focuses on not erasing those voices specifically for people of African heritage or people of color.”

A ceremony to celebrate the new flag along with a statement is being planned for this summer.
