Long Winter Break Ahead for UMD Women’s Hockey Team

The WCHA is expected to release the schedule for the second half of the season either Friday or early next week.

DULUTH, Minn. – Earlier this week, the UMD women’s hockey team learned that the first half of the season has come to an end after the WCHA cancelled their upcoming series against Wisconsin. So it was an unfortunate way to wrap up a stellar start to the season.

The Bulldogs went 4-2 in their first six games, scoring 24 goals in the process, which is #1 in the country. One big reason is the depth of the roster as six Bulldogs have scored multiple goals so far this season.

“I think we spent a lot of time this preseason on skills and I think that helped a lot with like changing your angle, being comfortable with being uncomfortable when shooting the puck as well. If it’s in your feet, just trying to get it off quick sometimes is the best thing than trying to stick-handle it,” said forward Naomi Rogge.

“We talked a lot this summer about not being satisfied. If we get one or two goals, wanting to get more. Definitely not surprised there more urgent on the ice. And definitely in the preseason in our scrimmages, there was a lot of girls scoring as well,” team captain Ashton Bell said.

But now UMD will go into a winter break that will last at least three weeks. And with state regulations keeping hockey rinks closed, head coach Maura Crowell hopes it won’t be too much of an issue for her team to stay in shape.

The WCHA is expected to release the schedule for the second half of the season either Friday or early next week.
