Fire Department Offers Safety Tips During Cold Snap

With the cold snap just around the corner, the Duluth Fire Department is offering up tips on how to stay safe.

DULUTH, Minn. – With the cold snap just around the corner, the Duluth Fire Department is offering up tips on how to stay safe.

They say you should always make your space heater is plugged into a wall outlet rather than a power strip, which can overheat if it’s dealing with too much wattage.

And if you do brave these upcoming temperatures, it’s best to keep it brief to avoid frostbite.

“The best thing to do is to just stay at home,” said Clint Reff, the assistant fire chief at the Fire Department. “I get that sometimes people have to travel, but on a day like today where the snow will be diminishing as the day goes on, that might be the time to get out there and get any groceries that you might need for the weekend.”

Even during the cold weather, people are still out ice fishing.

Fire officials want to let the public know that they are ramping up their ice rescue training to make sure they are ready in case someone needs some help.
