Minnesota Legion Baseball Expecting All-Time High in Participation This Summer
The Minnesota American Legion Baseball Committee says over 370 teams across the state will be playing this summer.
DULUTH, Minn. – With the prep baseball season wrapping up, that means Legion baseball is right around the corner.
According to the Minnesota American Legion Baseball Committee, participation has reached an all-time high in 2021 with over 370 teams across the state. And that comes as no surprise to local coaches, who dream about the day Legion baseball is as prominent as high school baseball.
“I think some of this is related to you take one year away and it is a little bit of everybody wanting what they didn’t have a year ago. But you don’t want to spend too much time thinking about the year that’s gone. You get really excited about the year in front of you. The idea of being able to play baseball in great weather and put together teams that look a little bit different than your high school team usually draws in some excitement and some different looks from different teams,” said local Legion baseball coach Joe Wicklund.
Last year was the first time since 1923 that a regular season for Legion baseball was not held in the state of Minnesota.
