COHASSET, Minn. – Governor Tim Walz announced Monday the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board approved $15 million to construct a new wood products manufacturing facility in Cohasset.

The mill was expected to bring about 150 jobs to the region that have a median hourly wage of $31 plus benefits.

“Something like this, the once in a 40-year deal that comes along, economic developing, what a great boost. So this, the timing couldn’t be better and the area couldn’t use it, couldn’t need it any more,” said Cohasset Mayor Greg Hagy.

The site also expects to employ 300-400 construction workers during the buildout.

“Loggers, truckers, all those areas that are impacted, that’s well over 500 additional jobs. So,the impact that it has on everyone in the city and this county can’t be understated,” City Administrator Max Peters said.

The company still needs to acquire the property, which is currently owned by Minnesota Power. It also needs the approval of certain legislative initiatives and funding from additional state entities.

“The State of Minnesota is proud to collaborate with Huber Engineered Woods to bring 150 new jobs to Cohasset,” said Governor Walz. “Huber is an innovative and unique leader in the building products industry, and we’re excited about the positive economic impact this investment will make in the region.”

HEW is a subsidiary of J.M. Huber Corporation, one of the largest family-owned companies in the United States. It would be HEW’s sixth mill in the U.S. and first in Minnesota.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Huber Engineered Woods to welcome 150 jobs to northeastern Minnesota. This is a win for our state,” said Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan.
