Expert Fire Safety for your Home

DULUTH, Minn.- It is important to practice fire safety with all of the fires happening in the Northland.

There were 141 fires in Duluth last year, and officials say the pandemic played a part in this statistic.

The pandemic kept many people at home last year, leading to more house fires than usual.

Negligent use of cooking materials and candles are the two most common ways of starting an indoor fire.

Indoor fires are hazardous in shared living facilities.

“As many ways, there are to have a fire, there are ways to prevent those fires,” said Jon Otis. “The biggest things are to-to be prepared if a fire happens. You’re never going to prevent everything, there’s always going to be some sort of a chance that a fire could start. So, be smart.”

Over-charging battery-powered devices is another common way for a fire to start.

People can prepare for and prevent a fire by having a smoke detector and an escape plan in an emergency.
