Fairhaven Farm Fundraising to Start Pizza Farm
SAGINAW, Minn. – A fundraiser kicks off Friday, February 18, for what would be the first pizza farm in the Northland.
Fairhaven Farm is looking to raise 33-thousand dollars to help build a new building that would house their current stone over, and allow them to cook and sell their pizza on site.
“The building would be 40 feet by 56,” says John Beaton, co-owner of Fairhaven Farm. “It will house our oven, a bar, and a wash pack area for our vegetables; so cleaning and washing our vegetables. The actual dining experience would be mostly outside. While you would order your pizza and drinks in the building, people can bring picnic blankets and kind of just set up in our big pasture and just enjoy being on the farm.”
Pizza farms are nothing new, as they have grown in popularity across the Midwest, particularly in the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin. Beaton says most of the ingredients would come from produce grown on their farm and other local sources they have worked out.
While the pizza farm would bring in more income for Fairhaven Farm, Benton adds it’s a chance for people to learn more about what farmers are doing in the Northland. “What really motivates us to do this is to bring people to the farm. Get them on a working farm so that they can connect with us, and connect with the agriculture that is happening in this region.”
People can learn more about the pizza farm concept at Bent Paddle Brewing on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. A Kickstarter page will also be set up that day to accept donations for the four-week fundraising period.
If all goes as planned, the first pizza will be made and sold in the fall of 2022.
