The USS Minneapolis-St.Paul Arrives in Duluth

The iron used to construct the ship came from the Mesabi Range.

DULUTH, Minn.- Shipping season has been underway in the Twin Ports since March, but today a special ship came into the harbor that you typically don’t see too often around here.

The USS Minneapolis-St. Paul cruised under the lift bridge this morning. This vessel is a Freedom class littoral combat ship of the United States Navy. Port officials tell us, the steel used in construction came from iron ore pellets from the Mesabi Range.

Duluth Seaway Port Authority, marketing and communications director, Jayson Hron says, “We have two great advantages here in the port Duluth-Superior. One is that we are North America’s furthest inland sea port, so that ability to be able to bring a ship like this so close to its namesake town of Minneapolis-St. Paul is something special to Duluth-Superior, given our seaway connection to the ocean is something you couldn’t do anywhere.”

The USS Minneapolis-St. Paul ship will be commissioned this Saturday.
