Superior Fuel Hosts Duluth Firefighters To Learn Life Saving Skills

DULUTH, Minn. — Many of us rely on propane and natural gas to heat our homes and live our lives, but safety is always an important part. That’s true for homeowners, delivery crews, and firefighters.

That’s why the Duluth Fire Department and the Superior Fuel Company are working together over the next four days.

Firefighters are making sure they understand the latest technology when it comes to various types of tanks, valves, and gas. This is what is called hazmat emergency training. For experienced firefighters it can be a refresher, and for rookies it is a valuable learning experience.

Damion Laurion of the Duluth Fire Department said, “Important for us because you know there’s a little bit of risk if there’s an accident involving a propane transport of fuel transport. So it’s good for us to know what to do in the case of am emergency or exposure to fire and how to shut off all the fuel.”

For Superior Fuel Company, it is a chance to help make sure firefighters are at ease and know exactly what to do. Sometimes they are called out by a worried homeowner who smells a leak, but other times it could be a serious fire or accident.

“One, it’s just a safety thing. We’re big about safety. Everything for us is a number one thing in our industry and number one thing for Superior Fuel Company is safety. So for us we want to teach safety to others. We want to get the fire crews and different departments like that. They could be the first one on the scene or something like that. Let’s say the propane driver is unresponsive and they need to do something. When people think about propane, a lot of people will start freezing right away, thinking you don’t know what to do, you don’t want to turn the wrong lever per se,” said Superior Fuel Company’s CFO, Joe Stariha.

Turnover on the fire department in recent years has made this training even more crucial. There are thirteen different crews that are going to make their way through the training as the week goes on.
