Duluth Folk School Hosts Egg Decorating Class

DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Folk School held an Ostara egg decorating party Sunday morning.

Ostara is a Pagan term for welcoming the spring season. All ages were welcome, as children and adults learned how to create natural dyes for eggs from produce, such as frozen blueberries and onion skins.

“The thing that I hope people take away from this is the idea that you are able to make and celebrate whatever is actually important to you, that you do it with people you care about, the more you do it, the more regularly, that’s how you build a tradition. So, find the things that are important to you, and make a tradition around it,” said Carolyn Kerns, class instructor.

This has been one of Kerns’ favorite traditions with her family over the years. While in class, they talked about symbolism and tradition, as eggs and flowers are both representative of the season.

“Our programming is about bringing people together, and so that can become traditions for people, they can start new activities at home, or within their families, or the neighbors, or neighborhoods, so we are about bringing people together, and getting those skills and developing connections between other people, but also the natural world, as well,” said Tim Bates, Chair of the Board at the Duluth Folk School.

The Duluth Folk School has a calendar of classes on its website.
