Wear Orange Event Held In Duluth To Remember Gun Violence Victims

DULUTH, Minn. — National Gun Violence Awareness Day happens the first Friday of June. A gathering was held at Lake Place Park in Duluth to celebrate and remember victims of gun violence.

The Wear Orange event included speeches, a bell ringing for gun violence victims, and a proclamation from the mayor.

The purpose of wearing orange started after a teen was shot in Chicago a few years ago. Her friends honoring her by wearing orange around her birthday.

A volunteer with Moms Demand Action says there are many ways for people to prevent gun violence in their daily lives, especially with these kinds of events.

“These are really inspiring times when people come together and recognize that you know the gun violence that the United States faces is not normal. This is not something that we have to accept and when we get together, and you know put our efforts together we really can make a difference on this issue. And so, it’s just great to be here and great to be with people who you know feel that some way,” said Sarah Mikesell, volunteer with Moms Demand Action.

The City of Duluth will light Enger Tower orange Friday night for the occasion.
