Summer’s Bounty Already Being Unearthed At The Food Farm In Wrenshall

WRENSHALL, Minn. — For as long as it seemed it took for summer to get here, there are more signs it has finally arrived.

One of those signs is some food in the ground getting ready to be harvested. That is the case at the Food Farm in Wrenshall. A certified organic farm, they deliver a variety of fresh food directly to customers’ doorsteps. The picking and unearthing stretches from mid-June through mid-October.

The owners say one big plus is that you end up trying items you might not think of grabbing in the store, but once it’s in your fridge, you go for it.
Another plus is how fast it gets from the ground to your table.

“When plants are grown in a more complex environment like that, the flavor is just much better, and having it grown close to home. You know, most of the food, all the food we are harvesting today will be in somebody’s refrigerator tonight. So, it’s not harvested, packed, sits in a warehouse, shipped to another place, sits in another warehouse, sits on the grocery store floor. I mean, it’s as fresh as you can get, just about,” said Janaki Fisher-Merritt, owner of the Food Farm.

Customers sign up for shares containing a variety of fresh food that happens to be in season at the time. The food is delivered to 16 locations in Duluth, Superior, Cloquet, Esko, and Wrenshall.
