Duluth Law Enforcement Participate In Red Ribbon Campaign

DULUTH, Minn. — Duluth Police squad cars are going to be carrying a special message this month.

On the back of each police vehicle there will be a unique rectangular, red, magnet. It is called the Red Ribbon campaign, and it is both a sobering reminder of the past, and a hope for the future.

It honors a federal special agent who was killed by drug traffickers, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Police hope the magnet also prompts discussions about drug use.

“The hope is to start that conversation. They see these red magnets, that sparks up that conversation. Promotes that drug-free lifestyle, helps people who are suffering from substance use disorders to get those resources in our community. And those resources include free fentanyl test strips, free Narcan, and their access in our community, and this just sparks that conversation,” said Mattie Hjelseth, Duluth Police Public Information Officer.

The magnets were donated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Duluth squad cars will carry that message through the rest of October.
