Northern Star: Kyra Johnson

Esko senior to play for Gustavus Adolphus

ESKO, Minn.- Esko’s class of 2024 has produced several students who will go on to play college athletics. That includes Kyra Johnson, who will play volleyball for Gustavus Adolphus next fall.

Johnson hasn’t been shy of sharing her admiration for both volleyball and her Esko teammates. “This season has been so much fun with all of them,” she says while smiling. “When we play together, it’s so much fun. The chemistry, the connection, it’s just there.”

In 2022, Johnson earned first-team all-conference honors in the Polar League. This season, she’s helped guide Esko to a 18-4 regular season record. Head Coach Pete Stasiuk, who’s coached at Esko since 2021, has seen firsthand of what Johnson brings to the floor.

“Good volleyball knowledge, just that effort level, and a good vertical jump and swing.” chuckles Stasiuk. “That big jump really helps in blocking and hitting, which is pretty key in volleyball.”

Johnson’s final season with Esko has been the first in her high school career that she’s shared the floor with her sister, Maya.

“It’s awesome, I love Maya,” says Kyra. “It’s so much fun, being able to watch her succeed. She’s my setter, so it’s super fun getting balls from her. We have a connection, like I know what I can say to her, and I can help her dig her out of a hole that she’s in, and she can help me too.”

“(Kyra’s) more serious on the court,” says Maya. “She takes it seriously, and then at home, she’s fun and silly.”

Kyra’s senior year in athletics isn’t over with volleyball as she’ll compete in basketball and track and field. However, volleyball has a special place in her heart.

“I’ve been playing volleyball since I can remember.” smiles Kyra. “It’s been in the family, and I fell in love with it instantly.”
