With Adam Johnson On Mind, UMD Men’s Hockey to Renew Rivalry with Minnesota

The Bulldogs plan to honor Johnson Saturday before their contest against Minnesota with a moment of silence, video tribute, and stick salute.

DULUTH, Minn.- It’s been a tough week for the UMD men’s hockey team as they continue to mourn the loss of former forward Adam Johnson.

The Bulldogs plan to honor Johnson Saturday before their contest against Minnesota with a moment of silence, video tribute, and stick salute.

They will also wear helmet decals with Johnson’s initials on it.

Many of the players mentioned that they’ve reflected on Johnson’s passing the past few days and they said getting back to playing hockey has been an outlet to help them cope.

“I think it’s good for us to keep coming back everyday. Keep getting on the ice, being around each other. It’s hard when you’re at home and thinking about it. The past few days I’ve been here a little longer just because I like being around here so it makes me feel at home,” said captain Luke Loheit.

“Yeah it’s tough, just try to talk about making sure we all understand and help each other out. Just deal with it as a group, that’s all you can do. If there’s guys struggling ever more, there’s not only teammates but people they can talk to,” added head coach Scott Sandelin.

The home and home series between the Gophers and Bulldogs begins Friday in Minneapolis at 7 PM.
