Business In Proctor Recreates Election Lawn Signs Into New Items

PROCTOR, Minn. — The general election in Duluth was a week ago Tuesday and some people may still have election signs out on their front lawn. Well, there is something you can do with them.

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District or WLSSD is partnering with Atlas Games, a company who publishes board games, card games, and role-playing games. So that those with leftover signs can bring them to their Replay Workshop in Proctor for good use.

The signs will be reused and recreated into items such as game pieces and jewelry.

WLSSD says the signs are meant for all kinds of weather we have here in Minnesota and are not easily disposable.

“So, they’re made of really durable materials. Of course, when you go to get rid of them at the end of the election season it means they’re not going to break down in a landfill and because some of them are made of even different materials then one another they’re tough to sort and recycle in a standard recycling facility,” said Emma Pardini, environmental program coordinator for WLSSD.

The President of Atlas Games says it is not just lawn signs that they recreate. WLSSD also sets aside large plastics for them.

“We can go up there and take as much as we’re willing to take things like big storage totes and tubs, and stuff like that. And we can shred them up and make them into new things,” said John Nephew, President of Atlas Games.

To make sure your election signs are put to good use WLSSD recommends speaking with the candidate you supported and see if they want those signs back to reuse for the future. Otherwise, you can bring those signs to the Materials Recovery Center off Rice Lake Road. You can contact Atlas Games for signs in bulk.
