Cenovus Superior Refinery Responds To Third-Party Railcar Leak

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Cenovus Superior Refinery responded to an emergency railcar leak Tuesday.

Cenovus Energy told FOX 21 the railcar was not theirs but belonged to a railroad company with cars at the plant.

On Wednesday, Cenovus said the issue had been resolved and no external emergency response was required.

Superior Fire Chief Cam Vollbrecht told FOX 21, it’s his understanding a faulty piece of equipment on the railcar caused the leak. He said Cenovus used a fog stream of water to dissipate any vapors, and personnel on scene monitored the air.

The chief said there was not a threat to the public.

In a statement, Cenovus said in part:

“The safety of people, the community, and the protection of the environment is our top priority.  Cenovus has strong processes in place for incidents like these and our teams are well trained to deal with them.”
