Update: Superior Firefighters Battle Wind-Driven Fire On Wisconsin Point

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Superior firefighters battled a wind-driver wildfire on Wisconsin Point Thursday evening.

Multiple fire department units responded around 4:30 p.m. in the area of Moccasin Mike Road and Lake Shore Drive.

Fire crews arrived on scene and reported “a sizable” fire on the beach area between Schafer Beach and Wisconsin Point Lot #1.

“Fire crews utilized bladder packs, hand tools and a side-by-side UTV with firefighting capabilities to extinguish the fire,” according to Steve Miner, battalion chief for the Superior Fire Department.

Miner said the remote location, limited access and strong winds were a challenge.

Firefighters were on scene at 7 p.m. mopping up hot spots around the roughly one-acre fire.

While a cause of the fire was under investigation Thursday night, Miner called on people enjoying recreational camp fires “to be mindful of the current weather conditions and to completely extinguish the fire before leaving the area.”
