Utility Companies Warn Customers Of Payment Scammers
DULUTH, Minn. — Minnesota Power and Superior Water, Light and Power are working together to warn customers not to fall for payment scams.
It is all part of Utilities United Against Scams Day. The most common scam is customers getting a phone call or email saying their power will be shut off due to unpaid bills. The utility companies recommend calling them right away if that happens.
Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated which makes anyone susceptible.
“You know I think it doesn’t really matter what age you are, right whether it’s older or younger because we’re finding that scammers in general are taking this, they’re really tuning into digital based scams. So, you can be on your computer, your iPhone, you know whatever that might be, and something will look legit,” said Amy Rutledge, Director of Corporate Communications for Minnesota Power and ALLETE.
Minnesota Power says if you are struggling to pay your bills to connect with them and they will help find something that works for you.
