Wisconsin Deer Firearms Season Starts Saturday

Minnesota's firearms season wraps up this weekend.

As the weekend approached, the winds changed and the temperatures dropped just in time for the end of Minnesota’s firearms deer season, and the opening of the Wisconsin firearms season.

In the Badger state’s Douglas County, deer stands have been checked out to make sure they’re still safe and make any needed repairs. Woods that have been quiet will soon be filled with hunters and blaze orange. While getting a deer is nice, safety is the most important thing. The DNR reminds hunters to treat every gun like it’s loaded and be sure you know what you’re aiming at.

Wisconsin DNR wildlife biologist Greg Kessler says that there are some common dangerous situations each season.

“Most of our accidents involve individuals with their own firearms, or groups that are acquainted with each other. So, safety is our number one concern,” Kessler said.

“Tree-stand safety is another one. Be sure that you’re climbing in and out of your stand safely with an unloaded firearm. That’s probably our number one accident, people falling out of their tree-stand or slipping as their going up or down, or heaven forbid, having a loaded firearm as they’re ascending or descending,” said Kessler.

Kessler said another important reminder is if you are hunting alone, be sure that someone knows where you are hunting and when you intend to be back. The DNR says if someone has a heart attack or breaks a leg, the sooner someone gets there for help, the better.
