Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank Plays Critical Role in Helping Feed Those in Need

DULUTH, Minn. –The nationwide Giving Tuesday event took place on Tuesday, one week after the Minnesota version, Give to the Max, fundraiser took place.

Shaye Moris, the Executive Director of Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, says the Give to the Max fundraiser went well. “Give to the Max Day was really successful. We had a five percent increase over last year, raised about $80,000 that included a generous match of $15,000 by the Catholic Charities Diocese of Superior.”

For Giving Tuesday, the Food Bank had a softer request for donations because of the success it had on Give to the Max.

It’s important for people to not only donate to their local food shelf but also to Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank because of the role it plays.

“About 95 percent of what food shelves provide in the local community does come from Second Harvest,” said Moris. “So it doesn’t matter if it’s Ely, Moose Lake, Hibbing, over to Hurley, Wisconsin. It’s really important that you not only support your local food shelf but Second Harvest for the impact it has on your community.”

Moris says Second Harvest Foodbank is able to stretch each dollar it’s given to provide seven dollars worth of food.
