SUPERIOR, Wis. –The city of Superior announced Friday that Paul Winterscheidt will be the city’s next police chief. The current chief, Nicholas Alexander retires in January of 2024.

Winterscheidt says he has known the current chief of police, Nicholas Alexander, since he started. “Chief Alexander’s definitely been a role model for me,” said Winterscheidt. “When I started here in 2005 he was my night sergeant. He did my first annual evaluation. As he progressed though the department, I pressed though the department and I have tried to learn from him every step of the way.”
When Winterscheidt becomes the chief on Jan. 27, he wants to continue and expand a program whose purpose is to keep people out of the justice system. “One of the things I’m very excited about is our Coordinated Outreach and Response Team, it’s called our CORE Team,” said Winterscheidt. “They will be able to respond to calls they may be able to deal with acute mental health issues, and other incidents which require law and mediation skills as an alternative response strategy.”
He also said that he wants to make sure the community is aware of and supporting the role that the police department is playing in Superior.
