Esko’s Spindler Taking On Increased Offensive Role

Averaged 10.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG, and 5 APG in 2022-23

ESKO, Minn.- The Esko boys basketball team is off to a 3-0 start to their 2023-24 season, and combo guard Dalton Spindler has played a major role in their success.

“I think my role is just to be a scorer and pass the ball a lot, get people open, play-make.” Over the last two seasons, Spindler has led Esko in assists, to which he credits the development of his on-court vision. “”That’s something I’ve worked on. I like getting people open. It’s always been a passion of mine.”

As a junior, Spindler averaged 10.5 points per game to go with 5.5 rebounds and five assists per game. This season, he’s adopting a shoot-first mindset while facilitating Esko’s offense. “I think I’ll be more of a shooter this year, take a lot of shots.”

“We’re asking him to step up in to more a scorer role this year,” says head coach Derek Anderson. “(Dalton) does a little bit of everything for us, but we want him to be more aggressive this season. He had a really good summer for us as far as attacking the rim and then finding the open guys, versus finding the open guys then attacking the rim.”‘

Whether it’s becoming a more aggressive scorer or stepping up as a leader, Spindler is ready to do his part in getting Esko back into the state tournament. “It’s going to take everything we’ve got, everyone’s got to work super hard in practice just get better every day.”

Esko will look to stay undefeated on Thursday when they face Minneapolis North (3-0) on their home court.
