Monday Update:

Authorities are putting out a warning about inconsistent ice conditions after more than two-dozen anglers were rescued Monday night from a chunk of floating ice.

The emergency happened on the Upper Red Lake in Beltrami County.

The call for help came in just before 5 p.m. for a report of up to 50 people stranded.

An airboat was brought in to rescue the anglers because the sheet of ice was too far from shore.

Strong winds at the time blew the ice chunk out about 200 feet.

Everybody was on shore by 8 p.m.

The number of stranded ended up being 35, according to authorities.

There were no injuries, and nobody fell into the water.

BELTRAMI CO., Minn. —  As of 7:30 p.m. Sunday, around 40 to 50 anglers were stranded on ice that broke away from the shore on Upper Red Lake.

Strong winds caused the ice to shift, according to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s office.

“We thank all of the many dedicated emergency responders who are yet again assisting fishermen stranded on Upper Red Lake. Upper Red Lake is a very popular fishing destination, frequently utilized before ice is stable resulting in the need to rescue people either from falling through the ice or floating on ice floats,” said Christopher Muller, Beltrami County public information officer.

No further information was immediately made available.
