Dabinoo’igan Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter Receives $90,000 Grant

The Ordean Foundation's donation will help expand AICHO's outreach and the shelters capacity

DULUTH, Minn. — The Dabinoo’igan Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter in Duluth is more than doubling its bed capacity thanks to a generous donation.

The Ordean Foundation made a $90,000 donation to celebrate its 90th Anniversary to American Indian Community Housing Organization or AICHO. According to AICHO Board Chair Mary Owen, the funds will not only help Dabinoo’igan grow from 10 to 23 beds, but also expand the group’s presence in the community through Indigenous art and cultural events.

“When I moved here, I’m Tlingit, I’m from Northwest, and our art and our culture is everywhere. In Duluth, that’s not the case,” Owen said. “The first time I ever saw Anishinaabe presence in such a strong way was when the mural came up on the wall of AICHO. Then everybody realized this is a native community. And what that does for our well-being and our culture as native people is tremendous.”

AICHO’s Executive Director LeAnn Littlewolf added the group is working to build community vibrancy and offset the disparities Indigenous people face. This donation will help them do just that.
