Duluth Marshall Boys Basketball Making Next Step with New Head Coach

It's a new era of Hilltopper basketball as Cam Berger takes over at the helm after being an assistant on last year's squad.

DULUTH, Minn.- Last season, the Duluth Marshall boys basketball team only had a four win campaign.

Fast forward to this year, and they’ve nearly reached that total, posting a 3-2 record in their first five games of the season.

It’s a new era of Hilltopper basketball as Cam Berger takes over at the helm after being an assistant on last year’s squad.

They also seen a big jump in one of their leaders in junior forward Brooks Johnson.

Johnson gave credit to his new coach as a key reason for the team’s turnaround. But he also says togetherness played another role in the surge.

“Just like the collectiveness that we’ve been playing with this year. It’s so much better than last year. I don’t know about our last game but coming into the last game, I was averaging 12 shots a game. Compared to last year, I almost averaged 30. I would say everyone is having way more fun this year. Everyone is scoring at a way higher level and that’s what’s lead to our sucess this season,” said Johnson.

With scoring being no issue for this Hilltopper squad, it’s what’s on the other end that they need to work on in the coming weeks.

“One of the things we can definitely improve is our defense because yes we can score a lot. But the main part of basketball is making them not score. Defense is another thing that we can always work on. So that’s just one of the main points for us to hit,” added junior forward Josh Johnson.

Duluth Marshall will next play East Central on December 26th as part of the Esko High School Coaches Classic.
