Spirit Mountain Doing Well With The Warmer Weather
DULUTH, Minn. — Warmer weather may put a damper on winter businesses, but Spirit Mountain in Duluth says they are not letting that stop them.
The hill has runs open for all ability levels including a terrain park, beginner hills, and longer runs. And this time of year, is especially busy with people in town visiting family and kids off school.
Crews are out whenever they can make snow with groomers going up and down all of the slopes every night. Spirit Mountain’s executive director says she is proud of all of the hard work they have put in.
“It’s a combination of art and science, so the ability to know when the weather conditions are going to be right, when the temps are going to be right, when the humidity is going to be right, and then to be out there and take advantage of every cold snap we have so that we are able to have all this terrain available for our guests,” said Ann Glumac, executive director for Spirit Mountain.
Last year they used 64-million gallons of water pumped from the St. Louis River, that is then reused. There is more than one type of snowmaking machine.
“One of them we call snow guns, they look kind of like cannons. And then the other is what we call a water stick and that is a tall tube that sort of sprays water. So, we use two different types of snowmaking equipment,” said Glumac.
Spirit Mountain encourages everyone to come out and see what they have to offer. The hill will be open Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed Christmas day.
