Two Safe After Breaking Through Ice on Upper Red Lake, Fourth Incident

UPPER RED LAKE, Minn. — Two men are safe after the all-terrain vehicle they were on broke through ice on Upper Red Lake Thursday morning. This is the fourth incident like this on Upper Red Lake in just two weeks.

According to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, it happened on December 28th around 7:30 am just north of the Southern Shore of Upper Red Lake.

After breaking through the ice the two fishermen were able to get out of the water, but were stranded.

First responders were called and dispatched, but before they arrived the men made it back to the resort they were staying at.

Despite being wet and cold there were no injuries reported. Arrangements have been made to remove the ATV as soon as the ice strengthens.

If you do choose to go on the ice, check the ice thickness frequently and know where you are traveling.
