One Seriously Injured After Head-On Crash in Balkan Township

BALKAN TOWNSHIP, Minn. — Saturday, December 30, St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a two-vehicle head-on crash around 6:00 a.m. in Balkan Township.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that one vehicle was traveling northbound on Hwy 5 and lost control on the ice-covered road.

The northbound vehicle struck an oncoming vehicle. The northbound vehicle rolled and ejected the driver, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt.

A 39-year-old driver was transported to a hospital in Hibbing and later transported to a Duluth hospital. The driver sustained serious and life-threatening injuries.

The other driver was treated on the scene and released.
