Duluth Public Library Looks to Provide Fun, Safe Place for Teens

Expanding Teen Space and Events to Thank for Increased Interest

DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Public Library is encouraging teens to come and hang out through programs like today’s Gaming Event.

The library invited students from sixth to twelfth grade to hang out, play board games, try out the Nintendo Switch, and enjoy some snacks. According to Senior Library Technician Heidi Harrison, many of the teenagers came from Harbor City International School, which doesn’t have its own official library.

“We really want to provide something that teens come and they feel safe,” Harrison said. “They don’t have to pay anything, they don’t have to buy a drink in order to be here. Just, to be able to come and socialize in a positive environment, a place where they are surrounded by books.”

Thanks to events like this and the June 2022 expansion of the Teen Area, the library has seen an increase in interest from the age group. Harrison hopes more students will come and “nerd out” in the space.
