Two Men Rescued After Breaking Through Ice On Upper Red Lake
Upper Red Lake, Minn. — Two men are safe after the vehicle they were on broke through ice on Upper Red Lake Thursday. This incident comes just one day after the vehicle restriction on Upper Red Lake, put in place December 30, was lifted.
At 5:09 pm on Thursday, January 11, 2024 the Beltrami County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from a fisherman that indicated two of the four members of their fishing party had broken through the ice on the southeastern part of Upper Red Lake.
First responders met the two individuals at the lodge where they were being warmed with blankets and heaters.
Both men, age 67, were being treated for hypothermia and cold weather exposure. One man was transported to Sanford Emergency Department in Bemidji with a broken hand.
While ice conditions have improved with colder weather, ice remains inconsistent in areas. Check ice thickness frequently.
