Skiers and Snowboards Hit the Slopes as Winter Kicks Up

DULUTH, Minn. — “I got my family in town. I live

here in Duluth but they’re from the other side of Wisconsin. We’re out here, it’s a gorgeous day so we’re just looking to get out on the slopes,” said skier Carson Polomis.

Spirit Mountain started its snow-making operations in mid-November and was able to open a few runs by the end of that month.

But the weather wasn’t ideal and the lack of snow halted trail openings.

One local skier got his first season pass this year and was excited to hit the slopes.

“I bought a season pass, it’s the first year. It was unfortunate when we didn’t have any snow at the beginning of it, but we’ve got a fair amount now. So I’m excited,” said Polomis. “There was like four runs, dirt everywhere.”

After a difficult start to the season, Spirt Mountain announced Friday that all downhill trails are now open.

So the Skiers and snowboards itching to explore more runs can now roam free.

“I just like to come out and I like all the little punch-out’s, side-swipes and I just like hitting random stuff,” said Polomis.

While Spirt Mountain and Mont du Lac Resort got a jump start on the season.

Chester Bowl held its reopening on January 11 after poor conditions halted operations.

Now that the skill hill is up and running again, so are group lessons at Chester.

The free lessons will take place every Saturday and Sunday through January and the first weekend of February.

So, now that a few winter storms have passed through the northland, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy a nice day of shredding hills.
