Duluth Fire Department Asks Public To Avoid Driving Over Hydrant Lines

DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Fire Department is addressing an issue that has been occurring when crews are on the job.

During fire incidents there have been multiple occasions of people driving over hydrant lines. Whether the hoses have water in them or not it is a danger.

This can lead to a punctured or severed hoses, and a hose can whip around injuring firefighters or even damaging cars around them. To avoid these things from happening the fire department asks you avoid the area altogether.

“Really the takeaway is that you know if you see red lights what could be police, fire, ambulance. If you see red lights stay a block away just make your turn to just clear the area. It helps there’s a lot of you know people whether they are firefighters, or sometimes you know Minnesota Power, other contractors are there walking through the scene. And it’s just one more layer to have to worry about if people are there,” said Brent Consie, Assistant Fire Chief, Duluth Fire Department.

It is important to know that driving over hose lines is illegal at emergency scenes. The Duluth Fire Department wants to ensure the safety of everyone involved when a fire occurs.
