Enbridge Energy has announced it is reducing its force by 650 people, according to an internal email sent to all employees.

The Calgary, Albert-based company says the cuts will be completed by March 1.

Enbridge has offices and operations in Minnesota and Wisconsin, including Duluth and Superior.

Enbridge says the reduction will not impact safety within its operation.

Below is the full statement provided to FOX 21 Wednesday:

“After careful evaluation, Enbridge has made the difficult, yet necessary, decision to reduce its workforce.

While we delivered strong financial performance in 2023, cost reduction measures are necessary to maintain our financial strength, be more cost competitive and enable us to grow. Persistent headwinds – including higher interest rates, economic uncertainty and the ripple effects of geopolitical developments – all contribute to increasingly challenging business conditions across many industries.

Reducing our operating costs and strengthening our competitiveness will enable us to weather near-term challenges and remain the first-choice energy delivery company in North America and beyond.

Decisions that impact our people are very difficult and will be made carefully. To minimize impacts, we will be looking first at reducing vacancies, contract positions and redeploying people where possible. Support will be provided to those leaving the company as well as those who remain.

Safety remains our number one priority. These reductions will not impact our ability to safely operate our assets and facilities, or our ability to ensure the safety of the communities in which we operate.”
