Authorities Investigate Fires at Royalton Manor Apartments in Superior
SUPERIOR, Wisc. — There has been a rash of fires in the Royalton Manor Apartment building complex over the last month and that has residents and city officials concerned.
Since the end of December, the Superior Fire Department has counted four fires at the apartments.
Fire Battalion Chief, Joe Tribbey, said the fires have been relatively small. “Since about December 28 of last year, we’ve had four relatively small fires that caused really no damage, no injuries to occupants, or firefighters. And they were quickly extinguished,” Tribbey said. “Of course, the concern is that we’ve had more than one. So, that’s what we’re starting to look at now.”
The fires have caught the attention of Superior Mayor Jim Paine, who wrote about the fires on his Facebook page and has received hundreds of comments. In the post, the mayor said the city is in contact with a buyer who wants to purchase the apartment, remodel the units, and turn the building into a seniors-only facility. FOX21 reached out to the mayor for more details but were told he is out of town.
Both the fire and police departments are investigating the fires, but said they could not release any information on the status of those investigations.
“We take any fire seriously,” said Tribbey. “But when we have fires in occupied buildings like that it heightens our awareness a lot. And really, what we just want people to understand is that we are actively working to get this to stop.”
Both the fire and police departments are making their presence known at the apartment complex. They’re walking the halls at different times and talking with residents.
