Hermantown Chamber of Commerce Hosts First Job Fair

DULUTH, Minn. — The Hermantown Area Chamber of Commerce held its first job fair and business showcase Thursday afternoon. The event was open to anyone looking for work but was also designed with the person looking for their first career job and for those who may be a little rusty in their job-hunting skills.

More than 35 organizations were on hand at the Clyde Event Center. The organizations ranged from public and private companies to state agencies, franchisees, and unions.

The president and CEO of the Hermantown Area Chamber of Commerce Kim Parmeter Said, “It is the whole gamut. So, it’s really fun to not only get out and network with the businesses and as a job seeker see the variety that is out there.”

Parmeter added that both employees and employers are learning the needs of an employee have changed a great deal in the last decade. “One of the things we’ve seen over the years is that there might have been a position now, that was two or three jobs 10 years ago. The employers have had to learn how to flex their business to make that model work. So, then the expectation with employees is, okay, you’re going to have to learn a few different sets of skills at the organization.”

Parmeter had a suggestion for those who are looking for work but couldn’t make it to the job fair.  She said job seekers should consider employers who have many positions behind the scenes. She used health care as an example. Saying it is not just doctors and nurses they need, but billing, marketing, and culinary employees as well.
